Who We Are

Founded in 2016, The Hartford Bishops’ Foundation, Inc. (HBF) is a 501(c)(3) forward-thinking nonprofit dedicated to advancing the mission of the Archdiocese of Hartford. This is achieved by supporting the Church’s mission within the wider context of the spiritual, social, and material well-being of everyone in the Hartford, Litchfield and New Haven counties.
  • What is the Foundation?

    The Hartford Bishops’ Foundation, Inc. (HBF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that carries out the commitment of the Archdiocese of Hartford and its Board of Directors to assess the need and take action. 


    HBF is dedicated to advancing the mission of the Archdiocese of Hartford by encouraging philanthropy and strategically investing in parishes, schools, ministries, and services that are integral to the Archdiocese’s vibrancy and long-term sustainability. 


    HBF plans and pursues the Forward with Faith Campaign comprising of four funding initiatives including Vibrant Parishes, Education, Social Service Outreach and Innovation and Emerging Opportunities.


  • About the Foundation

    Providing for the future of our mission is the goal of “Forward with Faith,” the first archdiocesan wide capital campaign in our 175 year history. The campaign is being conducted by the recently formed The Hartford Bishops’ Foundation, with the goal of raising significant funds for parishes themselves, and for the Foundation and its funding of grants, across the Archdiocese, to promote more vibrant parish life, Catholic education and lifelong learning, Catholic Charities and future innovative projects for the good of the Church and the wider community.


    The HBF benefits the Archdiocese and its parishes but has its own lay leadership and articles of incorporation. Chaired by James C. Smith, the Non-Executive Chairman of Webster Bank, the foundation has a board of 46 directors who represent the Archdiocese’s various constituencies: parishes, parents, friends and business and community leaders. These directors are legally responsible for the appropriate management, stewardship, distribution and protection of all campaign funds.


  • How Do We Support Our Mission?

    Donors:

    Enabling donors to make gifts that can be invested and managed for special or long-term projects that are above and beyond those addressed by the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal and the Cathedraticum;


    Funding:

    Creating long-term funding sources from which Foundation grants can be made over time to support projects, entities, and services that are integral to the long-term sustainability of the Archdiocese of Hartford; 


    Gifts:

    Channeling and strategically investing gifts into long-term.

What We Do

The HBF evokes Hartford's secular bishops and revolutionary business and finance leaders. The HBF will engage government, business, and other community leaders to assist the Archdiocese in promoting the common good.
